Among the beautiful customs of the Latin American peoples, few are as beloved as the quinceañera — the celebration of a daughter’s fifteenth birthday. Rightly understood, it is not principally a party but an act of worship: a young woman comes before the altar of God to give Him thanks for the gift of her life, to renew the promises of her Baptism, and to entrust her womanhood to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Patrick’s is honored to celebrate this tradition with your family.

Bien entendida, no es principalmente una fiesta, sino un acto de culto: una joven se presenta ante el altar de Dios para darle gracias por el don de su vida, renovar las promesas de su Bautismo y encomendar su vida de mujer a la protección de la Santísima Virgen María. An Act of Worship Before All Else
From her Baptism, a Christian belongs to God. At fifteen — on the threshold of womanhood — the quinceañera returns to the altar where her life in Christ began, to acknowledge before her family and the whole Church that everything she is and everything she will become is His gift. In the celebration she renews the promises of her Baptism, gives thanks for the Faith handed down to her, and places the years ahead under the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the model of all Christian womanhood.
The Church herself has honored this tradition: the bishops of the United States have approved a proper rite, the Order for the Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday, by which the Church publicly blesses the young woman and her intention to live for Christ.
Ante Todo, un Acto de Culto
Desde su Bautismo, el cristiano pertenece a Dios. A los quince años — en el umbral de su vida de mujer — la quinceañera vuelve al altar donde comenzó su vida en Cristo, para reconocer ante su familia y ante toda la Iglesia que todo lo que es, y todo lo que llegará a ser, es don suyo. En la celebración renueva las promesas de su Bautismo, da gracias por la fe que ha recibido, y pone los años venideros bajo el manto de la Santísima Virgen María, modelo de toda mujer cristiana.
La Iglesia misma ha honrado esta tradición: los obispos de los Estados Unidos han aprobado un rito propio, la Bendición al cumplir quince años, con el cual la Iglesia bendice públicamente a la joven y su propósito de vivir para Cristo.
What the Day Looks Like
The young woman, accompanied by her parents and godparents, is presented before the altar; she renews her baptismal promises; and the traditional symbols of the day — a rosary, a medal, a Bible, a ring — may be blessed and presented. Where it is the family’s custom, she may bring flowers to the image of Our Lady, asking the Mother of God to keep her pure, faithful, and courageous. The feasting that follows is right and good — but it follows: first the altar, then the table.
Cómo se Celebra el Día
La joven, acompañada de sus padres y de sus padrinos, es presentada ante el altar; renueva sus promesas bautismales; y los símbolos tradicionales del día — el rosario, la medalla, la Biblia, el anillo — pueden ser bendecidos y entregados. Donde así lo acostumbra la familia, puede llevar flores a la imagen de Nuestra Señora, pidiendo a la Madre de Dios que la guarde pura, fiel y valiente. El banquete que sigue es bueno y justo — pero viene después: primero el altar, luego la mesa.
What the Parish Asks
So that the day is celebrated worthily and without confusion, the parish asks every family to observe the following, drawn from our Quinceañera Protocol:
The quinceañera must be fully initiated in the Catholic Church — baptized, having received First Holy Communion, and confirmed.
She goes to the Sacrament of Reconciliation before the day of her celebration, so as to come to the altar with a clean heart.
The family invites and arranges their own deacon or priest to officiate the celebration, and provides his stipend directly. The parish provides the church, not the celebrant.
All planning — arrangements, rehearsal, and dress code — is made with Helen Heller, the parish’s wedding and Quinceañera coordinator, who opens and closes the church for the celebration. The parish office will put you in touch with her.
Quinceañeras are celebrated on Saturdays at 3:00 PM.
$600 for registered, active parishioners; $1,200 for non-parishioners — half upfront to secure the date on the parish calendar, the remaining half no later than one month before. A $100 cleaning deposit also applies (glitter is the usual culprit). The stipend for the deacon or priest is not included.
Lo que Pide la Parroquia
Para que el día se celebre dignamente y sin confusión, la parroquia pide a cada familia observar lo siguiente, tomado de nuestro Protocolo de Quinceañeras:
La quinceañera debe estar plenamente iniciada en la Iglesia Católica: bautizada, habiendo recibido la Primera Comunión, y confirmada.
Se acerca al Sacramento de la Reconciliación antes del día de su celebración, para llegar al altar con el corazón limpio.
La familia invita y consigue a su propio diácono o sacerdote para oficiar la celebración, y le entrega directamente su estipendio. La parroquia ofrece el templo, no el celebrante.
Todos los preparativos — arreglos, ensayo y código de vestimenta — se hacen con Helen Heller, coordinadora de bodas y quinceañeras de la parroquia, quien abre y cierra el templo para la celebración. La oficina parroquial le pondrá en contacto con ella.
Las quinceañeras se celebran los sábados a las 3:00 de la tarde.
$600 para feligreses registrados y activos; $1,200 para quienes no son feligreses — la mitad por adelantado para reservar la fecha en el calendario parroquial, y la otra mitad a más tardar un mes antes.
